Benny Goodman was arguably the top jazz clarinetist of all time, and although he has always been associated closely with the swing era, his brilliant playing never declined even after the dominance of the big bands became history. This Pausa LP reissue of some of his Capitol recordings features Goodman mostly in a trio with pianist Teddy Wilson and drummer Jimmy Crawford in 1947, along with a slightly earlier duet with pianist Jess Stacy and a trio track from 1954 with Mel Powell. Throughout, the clarinetist seems inspired, stretching out on a variety of standards, most of which were not specifically associated with him. This highly enjoyable music deserves to be reissued on CD. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
