Jean Aubert
(fl. 1702–41)
French architect. He worked for Hardouin-Mansart before being taken up by the Bourbon-Condé family for whom he remodelled the Château of Saint-Maur-des-Fosses, near Paris (1709–10). At Chantilly (Oise) he designed the stables for the Château (1719–35), and in Paris he was responsible for the Palais Bourbon (1724— destroyed). Two of his finest works were the Hôtel de Lassay (1724–8) and the Hôtel Peyrenc de Moras (1728–32), both in Paris. His interiors of the Petit Château, Chantilly (1718–22), are exquisite. He used powerful horizontal channelling on his rusticated wall-surfaces, and his interiors typified the elegant Regence style.
