Jean Laurent Le Cerf de la Viéville

( b Rouen, 1674; d there, 10 Nov 1707). French author and amateur musician. His defence of French music in his major work, the Comparaison de la musique italienne et de la musique française (1704-6), forms an important contribution to the development of musical criticism and aesthetics in the early 18th century.
