Author's Description

I'm a technology writer, and have been in the technical magazine and book business for over 20 years. I've written 12 technical books and portions of 25 or 30 others, on topics as diverse as Delphi programming, Wi-Fi, Email, x86 assembly language, Netscape, and what have you. I've published a little science fiction, which has been well-received, and I was on the final Hugo Awards ballot in 1981. (I lost.)

I began ContraPositive Diary in 1998 as an adjunct to Visual Developer Magazine, which I created and edited until it folded in 2000. At first it was devoted to computer topics, then non-computer technical and scientific topics, and eventually to anything I found interesting. I have a contrarian outlook, and I try to make my viewpoints unusual, even surprising, and whenever possible something that people can learn from. I dabble very little in politics, and when I do I stand firmly in the middle and throw things at both extremes.

I had never seen a Web diary or blog when I first put ContraPositive together (the term "blog" didn't exist in 1998) and while it is not the oldest blog still running, I claim independent invention.
