Jefferson Holt is the former manager of rock band R.E.M., often referred to as the band's "fifth member," from 1981-1996.
In 1996, Holt was accused of sexual harrassment by a female member of R.E.M.'s office staff.[1] Though the case was settled out of court, and though Holt vehemently denied any sexual harassment, he was fired on June 13th for reasons unknown.[2]
Under the name Vibrating Egg, Holt recorded a solo single on Dog Gone Records, which included Mike Mills on bass.[citation needed]
Holt now lives with his family in North Carolina, where he collects art and memorabilia, publishes books, and pursues sundry philanthropic interests.
References to Holt in R.E.M. songs
Holt is referenced in the 1985 R.E.M. song "Cant Get There from Here" ("lawyer Jeff he knows the low-down"), and also in the song "Little America," from 1984's Reckoning album. The song's (and album's) last line, "Jefferson, I think we're lost," was changed to "Washington, I think we're lost" when the song was revived for live shows since 2003.[citation needed]
