("Yah has judged")
1. The son of Ahilud, the recorder (or: secretary) in the administrations of David (II Sam 8:16; 20:24; I Chr 18:15) and Solomon (I Kgs 4:3).
2. The son of Paruah, appointed over Issachar (I Kgs 4:17). He was one of 12 such officers, each of whom provided victuals for King Solomon's household for one month in a year (I Kgs 4:7).
3. Son of Nimshi and the father of King Jehu of Israel.
4. Son of King Asa and Azubah; he became king of Judah (873-849 B.C.) at the age of 35, and reigned for 25 years (I Kgs 22:42; II Chr 20:31) including a few years as a co-regent with his father.
During his reign he eradicated the pagan cults and sent priests and Levites all over the country to teach the law of God (II Chr 17:7-9). He reorganized the administration and appointed judges in the cities of Judah, with an appeal court in Jerusalem (II Chr 19:4-11). He fortified cities in Judah and placed standing garrisons in Ephraim (II Chr 17:1-2), built fortresses and store cities (II Chr 17:12-13) and strengthened the military forces (II Chr 7:14-19).
He was the first king to conclude a treaty with the Northern Kingdom of Israel which involved betrothing his son Jehoram to Ahab's daughter Athaliah (I Kgs 22:44; II Chr 18:1). The alliance between the two kingdoms brought prosperity to Judah, and overawed the surrounding nations: the Philistines and Arabs brought him tribute (II Chr 17:10-11) and even Edom came under his yoke (I Kgs 22:47), thereby granting him control over the copper mines in the desert and over the main routes from Arabia. Together with Israel and probably Tyre he attempted to build a navy in Ezion Geber (I Kgs 22:48-49; II Chr 20:35-37).
Jehoshaphat died in Jerusalem and was buried in the City of David.
