Biography

Jennifer Lane is a leading American mezzo-soprano, with a wide and diverse repertory ranging from the baroque era to the newest music. She appeared as both Dido and the Sorceress in the Mark Morris Dance Group's production and film of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. Her Metropolitan Opera debut season (1999) saw her sing in Schoenberg's Moses und Aron and Janacek's Katya Kabanova; at Mstislav Rostropovich's Evian Festival, she premiered the title role in Ligeia, Augusta Read Thomas' opera on the life of Edgar Allen Poe. She also has sung with the Opera of Caen, the Minnesota Orchestra, the St. Louis Symphony, the New York City Opera, the Utah Symphony, and at the Halle Opera House.

She is in demand as a teacher of graduate classes, having taught them at CW Post University, Mannes College, Old Dominion University, and the San Francisco Opera Young Artists Program. In 1996, she joined the voice faculty of Stanford University where, in addition to teaching, she has produced and directed opera performances, beginning with a period performance of Dido & Aeneas. She also teaches regularly, at the Amherst Early Music Festival and the Lake Placid Institute Vocal Seminars. Jennifer Lane has recorded on the Dorian, Naxos, Harmonia Mundi USA, Opus 111, Koch International, CBC Records, Arabesque, PGM, and Newport Classics labels.
