Biography

Following a well-received starring role in Paul Verhoeven's Soldaat Van Oranje (1979), burly, handsome Dutch actor Jeroen Krabbe learned to act at the Amsterdam Academy of Performing Arts and got his start playing small roles in such films as Alicia (1974). During his early years, Krabbe founded a touring theater company, directed plays, worked as a costume designer, and translated foreign plays into Dutch. His star status was solidified when Verhoeven cast Krabbe in De Vierde Man (The Fourth Man) (1983), which has since become a cult favorite. This film gave Krabbe an international reputation and in the mid-'80s, he moved to Hollywood to appear in such films as Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986) and Prince of Tides (1991). Through the '90s, Krabbe tended to play large villains in dramas and costume dramas ranging from The Fugitive (1993) to Farianelli (1994) to Lorca (1997). When not acting, Krabbe is a noted painter and author of The Economy Cookbook. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Biography

Krabbé was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, the son of Margreet (née Reiss), a film translator, and Maarten Krabbé, a painter.[1] Born into an artistic family, he first came to prominence in fellow Dutchman Paul Verhoeven's films Soldier of Orange opposite Rutger Hauer and The Fourth Man with Renée Soutendijk.

His first big American film was the Whoopi Goldberg comedy Jumpin' Jack Flash. However, it is as the 'bad guy' in a string of international films from the late 1980s which brought him international stardom, with notable films being No Mercy (1986), the James Bond film The Living Daylights (1987), The Punisher (1989), and The Fugitive (1993). He has also appeared in numerous TV productions, and as 'Satan' in the TV production Jesus.

He has also been both director, and producer recently with a film about Orthodox Jews during the 1970s in Antwerp (Flanders) co-starring Isabella Rossellini, and Maximilian Schell called Left Luggage made in 1998 and the Harry Mulisch novel adapted into film The Discovery of Heaven.

Apart from acting and directing he is an accomplished artist (his paintings have graced Dutch postal stamps) and co-authored a Dutch cookbook. In November 2004 he released the book Schilder, which is an overview of his paintings.

Krabbé has three sons, Martijn, Jasper and Jacob. His brother is journalist and novelist Tim Krabbé.
