Jersey Black is a variety of Malus domestica
This is an old american apple, thought to originate circa 1817 but has fallen somewhat out of favour now. Also known as the Black Apple as its skin is very dark red, bordering onto black.
It is a very good dessert apple, with sweet white firm flesh. It used to be used not only for eating but the production of cider.
Notable for a cross with a McIntosh red to produce the Macoun which was crossed with an unidentified hybrid [Honeygold cross between Golden Delecious and Haralson] at the University of Minnesota to produce the now very popular Honeycrisp, similar in taste to the McIntosh but with firmer flesh.
