Jersey Devil

Game Description

Jersey Devil, as the title implies, is loosely based upon the legendary New Jersey beast of the same name. Instead of the horrific beast the legend describes, the protagonist of the title is cute purple creature with long-ears and small wings. Dr. Knarf -- the villain of the piece -- has created a legion of mutated vegetables to do his evil bidding, and it falls to Jersey Devil to stop the maniacal scientist. To do this, the purple protagonist must venture through a series of 3D platform stages spread across themed environments such as a museum, cemetery, forest, and even a haunted house. Endowed with an ample set of abilities, Jersey Devil must jump, glide, and tail whip his way through the hordes of vegetables and undead minions, the latter comprising such mainstays as zombies, bats, and spiders. Outlandish boss creatures must also be defeated at the end of each environment. As is the case with titles of this ilk, when not engaged in combat, players will need to navigate a plethora of platforms, death-defying leaps, and gaping chasms.

The camera can be rotated manually as the player sees fit. Strewn about the many locales are pumpkins, KNARF tokens, and an assortment of boxes. Collecting a hundred pumpkins will reward the player with an extra life, while finding the five KNARF tokens will allow players to unlock doors and progress further into a given level. Run-of-the-mill boxes can be broken to reveal useful items, while TNT boxes can be thrown at enemies. Yet others serve as mid-level checkpoints, allowing the player to resume the level from the last checkpoint activated. Also, by destroying the nitro boxes in each level, Jersey Devil's power level will be increased. Lastly, completists can seek out the two hostages that are hidden in each stage. ~ Gavin Frankle, All Game Guide

Jersey Devil is a 3D platform game released for the PlayStation. Jersey Devil, the protagonist of the game, is (hinted by his/her name) a Jersey Devil, although shares more characteristics to that of a bat. His primary mission is to stop Dr. Knarf, who tries to stop Jersey Devil with mutated pumpkins. Jersey Devil uses his punch, jumping, and gliding abilities to defeat his enemies. In numerous areas of the game, it is necessary to collect all five letters of Knarf's name to proceed, adding a puzzle element to the gameplay.

Levels in the game include: Museum Madness, Dome Sweet Dome, Green Park, Root Canal, Cemetery, Haunted Mansion, Chemical Wasteland, Sludge Slides, Sewer Port, Monkey's Trail, Knarf's Forest, and Knarf's Lair.

Criticism

This game was somewhat disliked by both reviewers and gamers alike for its camera controls and that objects will sometimes seem "invisible" when behind Jersey Devil. However, a common praise given to the game was its orchestral score by Gilles Léveillé.

Trivia

  • The game's title character is an obvious reference to the fabled Jersey Devil, as his name implies.
  • In reviews, this game is often compared to Gex: Enter the Gecko because they share common complaints and their gameplay is somewhat similar.
