jersey finger injury

Sports Science and Medicine: jersey finger injury

An avulsion fracture of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon, usually affecting the ring finger, causing an inability to flex the interphalangeal joint. It is common among Rugby players and American footballers who grab the jersey of an opponent during a tackle. It has also been reported in ice hockey players who remove their gloves to grab an opponent's jersey during a fight. Jersey finger is treated by surgical reattachment of the tendon.
