Jerusalem Day

Encyclopedia of Judaism: Jerusalem Day

(Heb. Yom Yerushalayim). Annual celebration in Israel and in some Diaspora communities of the reunification of Jerusalem in the course of the Six-Day War on 28 Iyyar 5727 (7 June 1967). On that day, the Israel Defense Forces reunited the "Old City" of Jerusalem (which had been under Jordanian rule) with the "New City," and all Jerusalem came under Jewish sovereignty for the first time since the Second Temple period.

28 Iyyar was proclaimed as an official day of celebration in Israel. In most congregations the entire Hallel Service is recited (including the blessing for Hallel).

The official prayer book of the Conservative movement includes the recitation of the Hallel and other special prayers.
