German Literature Companion:

Jery und Bätely

Jery und Bätely, a Singspiel written by Goethe in 1779, and published in 1790. Bätely is a Swiss smallholder's daughter, who refuses to marry Jery, a worthy young man who loves her. The returned soldier Thomas undertakes to put matters right, but makes such a nuisance of himself to Bätely and her father that they call in Jery to drive him away. Though he is not able to cope with Thomas, Bätely is now willing to marry Jery, and all are reconciled. The play was performed in Weimar in June 1804.
