Origins

Jesmond was originally known as Dark Creek. The area developed from the landowner’s steam saw mills and employment in local orchards, quarries and mines. By 1883 there were 600 residents and an established village. In the 1880’s, John Campion opened a soap works in Jesmond and by the early 1900’s his brand was well know throughout NSW[1]. Jesmond was named after the Tyneside town in the North of England[2].

Today

Jesmond provides a commercial centre as well as residential area for both students of the University and the aging, with specific aged housing facilities. Jesmond has become a multicultural area due to many international university students living in the suburb[1].
