Biography

A graduate of Davis Community College, in Owensboro, KY, Jesse Duffy entered films in 1927 as an assistant director and gagman for independent producer Larry Darmour. A seemingly tireless journeyman writer-director, Duffy worked in various capacities on such two-reel comedy series as Ton of Fun, Barney Google, and the Mickey McGuire series starring the later Mickey Rooney. He was named production manager for low-budget company Majestic Pictures (1934-1935) and later worked in that capacity and as an assistant director on a host of B-Westerns starring the likes of Ken Maynard, Bob Allen, Jack Luden, and William Elliott. As a screenwriter, Duffy was mostly associated with serials produced by old friend Larry Darmour for Columbia and, from 1943, Republic Pictures, where, as a staff writer, he contributed to nearly all of that company's great serials through 1948. Duffy's early death in 1952 was attributed to Parkinson's disease. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide
