English Surveyor to the Liverpool Dock Trustees (1824–60), in which capacity he designed (with contributions from P. C. Hardwick) the Albert Dock (1843–5), a powerful exercise in utilitarian brick carried on massive unfluted cast-iron Doric columns. It is as Sublime an ensemble as anywhere in Europe.
