Jesuit architecture

A distinct architectural style may be detected in Jesuit churches from the end of C16. The Society of Jesus played an important role in the evolution of Baroque architecture, starting with Vignola and della Porta's Il Gesù, Rome, which served as a precedent for countless buildings (e.g. St-Roch, Paris, Church of St Carolus Borromeus, Antwerp (1615–24) ). Theatrical interiors and two-storey façades were essential elements.
