History

Jet2 Limited is a subsidiary of the Dart Group PLC, an aviation services and distribution group. The airline began operating commercial aircraft in 1978 under the name Channel Express (Air Services), initially as a freight operator and then from 2001 operating both freight and passenger charter services using Boeing aircraft to international destinations on mainly short and medium haul flights.

In 2006 the company relocated from Bournemouth to Leeds and was renamed Jet2 Limited[3]. Following the rebranding Jet2.com continued to operate the same contract charter and freight flights that had been operated under the Channel Express name.

The airline opened its first and main base at Leeds Bradford International, also its hub airport, before later opening a secondary base at Manchester Airport in December 2004. Bases have since opened at Belfast International Airport, Blackpool Airport, Newcastle Airport and Edinburgh Airport, and its fleet has grown substantially, taking in additional Boeing 737-300s and in 2005 a number of larger Boeing 757-200s. A new base will open at East Midlands Airport in spring 2010.[4]

Unlike other low-cost carriers, Jet2 tickets be booked via travel agents [5] as well as over the internet and by telephone.

The airline carried 600,000 passengers in 2003, its first year of operation, and 3.8 million passengers on over 34,000 flights in 2007.

The Dart Group also has a separate division, Jet2holidays.com, offering package holidays which incorporate Jet2 flights with private taxi transfers and hotel accommodation. Package holidays are offered from all six UK bases to destinations such as Spain, the Canary Islands and to several Greek Islands.

During November and December 2008 the airline operated a series of four direct flights from Leeds Bradford to Newark Liberty International Airport.

During November 2008 Jet2 changed its slogan from "The North's Low Cost Airline" to "Friendly Low Fares".

Jet2 aircraft are silver with the company's logo in red and white at the front end of the plane. The tails are red with the company's logo in white and silver. However, when the company leased planes they had a hybrid livery. Aircraft are being branded with the new "Friendly Low Fares" slogan above cabin windows.[9] The Jet2.com livery may have either 'Yorkshire' or 'Manchester' written across the aircraft side. Each aircraft is named after one of the destinations, and the name is shown on the side of the nose.
