Biography

Consisting of ex-Jawbreaker frontman Blake Schwarzenbach, ex-Texas Is the Reason drummer Chris Daly, and ex-Handsome vocalist/guitarist Jeremy Chatelain, Jets to Brazil could be considered an amalgam of their forefathers with a slightly darker and more mature musical perspective. With the 1998 release of their first LP, Orange Rhyming Dictionary, Jets to Brazil took the expectations of their peers and turned them on their heads, surprising most with their breed of music that is fresh and excitingly powerful. As the bandmembers continue to move away from their namesakes and become more comfortable with their expanding sound, the world could see something quite intriguing evolve. Jets to Brazil followed up with Four Cornered Night in August 2000. Two years later, the band returned with their darkest, most inspirational material to date; Perfecting Loneliness appeared on Jade Tree in October 2002 and reflected mega-tight musicianship from the band. ~ Blake Butler, All Music Guide

Jets to Brazil was an American rock band formed in 1997. It was founded by Blake Schwarzenbach, former frontman of Jawbreaker. When Blake relocated to Brooklyn, New York, after Jawbreaker had disbanded, he reunited with friend Jeremy Chatelain, and the two began working on four-track recordings aided by drum machines. This lasted until former Texas Is the Reason drummer Chris Daly joined the band. Daly came up with the name "Jets to Brazil," and the band joined Jade Tree Records in 1997. The origin of the band's name comes from a poster in the film Breakfast at Tiffany's, a film well-liked among the band members.

The group's first album, Orange Rhyming Dictionary, was released on Jade Tree Records in 1998. They did extensive touring following its release with bands like The Promise Ring. The band followed up the success of Orange Rhyming Dictionary with Four Cornered Night in 2000. Four Cornered Night featured new guitarist Brian Maryansky, formerly of the band The Van Pelt. This shift allowed Blake to become the pianist for the band. In 2002, Jets to Brazil launched their third—and what was to be final—album, Perfecting Loneliness. By fall of 2003, the band had broken up for unspecified reasons.

Blake now teaches English at Hunter College in New York and is pursuing a Ph.D. in English Literature; and in October 2008, Blake started a new band, The Thorns of Life. Chris has reunited Texas Is The Reason for two shows at NYC's Irving Plaza in November 2006, with no actual future plans to reunite.

"Sweet Avenue," the final track of Orange Rhyming Dictionary, is often attributed to Damien Rice due to misattribution on peer-to-peer networks.
