Biography

Born in British Colombia in 1982, Jewel Staite began her career at age six when she was discovered at a Sears photography studio. At first the little girl was completely uninterested in appearing in a video, but once she was promised the chance to wear pretty clothes, she agreed. Staite soon appeared in commercials and on television shows such as Liar, Liar, The Odyssey, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and The X-Files. At age 14, she was offered the lead role on the Disney TV show Space Cases. She soon afterward took a recurring role on the series Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show, as well as the troubled teen series Higher Ground. She continued to maintain her career through regular appearances on television until 2002 when Joss Whedon offered her a role that would help to define her as an actress. Playing the adorable, genius mechanic Kaylee aboard a space cargo ship on the TV series Firefly, Staite endeared herself to a feverishly devoted fan base. The cult audience that Firefly earned, however, was not enough for Fox to keep it on the air, and the series was pulled after only 11 episodes. Staite disappointed many fans when she was married in 2003. She regularly appeared on Wonderfalls, another "tragically canceled" show, before reprising the role of Kaylee in 2005 for the feature film adaptation of Firefly, Serenity. Jewel Belair Staite (born June 2, 1982) is a Gemini and Leo Award nominated Canadian actress, who portrayed Kaylee Frye in Firefly and Serenity, and Dr. Jennifer Keller on Stargate Atlantis.

Personal life

Staite was born in White Rock, British Columbia. The youngest of seven children, she modeled as a child and has acted since age six. She attended the Vancouver Film School and worked at the Vancouver Youth Theatre. She married Matt Anderson on April 25, 2003.

Staite has worked with the Dyslexia Foundation and several AIDS charities.

Career

Staite played Kaylee Frye in the short-lived science fiction/western television series Firefly and its subsequent 2005 film, Serenity. She also wrote a chapter in the book Finding Serenity, called "Kaylee Speaks: Jewel Staite On Firefly".

She also played Heidi Gotts, the antagonist in the TV series Wonderfalls and appeared in a Season Three episode of the X-Files.

Staite played the role of head of medicine Dr. Jennifer Keller in the Stargate SG-1 spinoff Stargate Atlantis,[1] making her the third actor from the Firefly series to move on to appear in a Stargate series (the first being Adam Baldwin and the second being Morena Baccarin), and the second to take a recurring role. She replaced Paul McGillion (Dr. Carson Beckett). In the fifth season her character was changed from recurring status to part of the main cast.[2] Before taking on the role as Dr. Keller she previously played the Wraith child Ellia in the Stargate Atlantis episode "Instinct". She will star in the 2010 RHI Entertainment thriller, Mothman, under the direction from Sheldon Wilson.[3]
