Jharsuguda is a municipality located in the Jharsuguda district of Orissa, India. Within Orissa, the town is situated in the region of Western Orissa.

Geography

Jharsuguda is located at 21°51′N 84°02′E / 21.85°N 84.03°E / 21.85; 84.03[1]. It has an average elevation of 218 metres (715 feet). It is on the bank of the IB River

Demographics

As of 2001 India census[2], Jharsuguda had a population of 75,570. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. It has an average literacy rate of 89%, higher than the national average of 73%: male literacy being 77% and female literacy at 60%. Around 12% of the population of Jharsuguda are under 6 years of age.

Culture

  • Durga Puja: There are many mandap come up during Durga puja.
  • Nuakhai: It is an important festival for the people of Western Orissa. All the persons of a family gather during this period and eat together. After that, the younger take the blessings of elders and dance with friends.
  • Makar yatra (Samasingha): This famous festival is usually celebrated on January 26 every year.

People

The bulk of Jharsuguda's population is made up of the Western Orissa (Sambalpuri Spoken) people (the native people of Western Orissa), but the recent years have seen the town developing rapidly, which has allowed many other Indian groups to migrate to this place. These groups include Coastal Orissa people,Bengalis, Biharis , Marwaris, Gujrathis, Punjabis etc. In fact, the industries like Vendanta have appointed many Chinese people from China to work for them and it has been estimated that by the end of the year 2009 about 120 Chinese families will settle here. The ethnic group list of Jharsuguda is dominated by the Hindus, who form about 86% of the city's population and the rest 14% is made up by the Muslims, Christians, Buddhists and traces of Parsees.

Language

The main language spoken in Jharsuguda is Oriya.The native of this area speak local Sambalpuri Oriya language.

The other language spoken in Jharsuguda town are Hindi,Gujrati and Chattisgarhi.

Economy and infrastructure

This cosmopolitan town is fast emerging as the economic hub of Western Orissa and there is a vision of master plan for the city by the state Govt[3]. Currently, many small- and medium-scale steel units are being set up in the town vicinity, primary being Bhushan Power & Steel Limited (Thelkoloi village, Sambalpur district), SMC Power Generation Ltd., Action Ispat Ltd., Eastern Steel & Power Ltd., SPS Steel & Power Ltd. A few large scale units of Vedanta Alumina Ltd and Utkal Alumina International Ltd will be setting up units in the area

  • Vedanta Aluminium Limited (VAL), currently setting up a 0.5 million tonne aluminium smelter and 675 MW captive power plant at Jharsuguda in Orissa, has chalked out massive 4.6 billion dollar expansion for the project.[4]
  • Reliance Energy Ltd has proposed to set up a 12,000 mW thermal power plant at a cost of Rs 48,000 crore (Rs 480 billion) at Hirma in the Jharsuguda district of Orissa.[5]
  • Sterlite company is developing a 2,400 MW power plant at Jharsuguda.[6]

Jharsuguda is a beautiful diaspora of different origins of people from across India which makes it unique & different from other cities in Orissa. Jharsuguda also has a considerable Anglo-Indian community living since before 1947. Due to its versatility, Hindi happens to be the prominently spoken language rather than local vernaculars.(Sambalpuri Language)

Transport

Since pre-independence days, the town has had a relatively developed transportation network. The main mode of transport is cycle rickshaw. However, from last few years auto rickshaws have also started for local transport. The main road starts from Sarbahal and goes till Beheramal.

Rail

The railway station comes under South Eastern Railway. Being an important junction on the erstwhile Bengal Nagpur Railways and the current Howrah-Mumbai route, Jharsuguda is directly connected to all the metros &states of India, especially Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand.

Politics

Current MLA from Jharsuguda Assembly Constituency is Nabo Das who has won the seat in State elections of 2009 by defeating Kishor Mohanty of BJD. Birendra Chandra Pandey of INC had won this seat in 1995 and in 1985, and also as INC(I) candidate in 1980. Sairindra Nayak of INC was MLA from this seat in 1977.[12] Dulari Buda Councelor of Buromal(Number 23)2009 Jharsuguda is part of Bargarh (Lok Sabha constituency).[13]
