Biography

Although he was a founding member of Quicksilver Messenger Service, Murray was out of the band by the time the first Quicksilver album was released, and details remain somewhat vague as to what he contributed during the time he was in the group. When Quicksilver started, it was a quintet of John Cippolina, David Freiberg, Gary Duncan, and Greg Elmore, with Murray adding some vocals and harmonica. At the very outset, Murray was playing guitar, but he did not seem to offer too much in this department. Freiberg has said that Murray wasn't into working too hard, and that the band was better off without him, in part because it made Duncan (originally envisioned primarily as a singer for the band) take a more active role as a guitarist. Murray left around mid-1967 and moved to Maui. Does he play on any of the tracks Quicksilver recorded? Although he's not on the first album, it's been intimated that he helped on some recordings they made prior to that. Certainly he is on some unreleased tapes and bootlegs done prior to his departure. Judging from these, even then his role in the band was small and peripheral, though he would take occasional lead vocals, as on a cover of Mose Allison's "Your Time Will Come." ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
