Biography

Born in Newark, NJ, in 1952, percussionist Jim Pugliese was influenced by R&B while growing up. Later, he studied percussion with Raymond Des Roches, and performed new music with composers John Cage, Philip Glass (including a '90s performance on PBS' Sessions at West 54th Street), and Carlos Chavez, to name a few. Pugliese studied and performed microtonal music, and spent 12 years playing in Dean Drummond's Newband, as well as performing in the Harry Partch Ensemble. During this time, Pugliese also became interested in Afro-Cuban music, and began studying with master drummer Pablo Landrum. Since the mid-'80s, Pugliese has lived in N.Y.C., improvising and recording with many of the downtown jazz and new music scene standouts, such as John Zorn and Anthony Coleman. His music has been performed all over the city at venues like the Roulette, the Knitting Factory, and the Lincoln Center Outdoor Festival. He has toured the U.S., Europe, and Japan appearing at the FIMAV, Bang on a Can, Nicolsdorf Jazz, and other festivals, and has received several Meet the Composer grants. At the end of 1997, the Avant label released the first CD by EasSide Percussion. Christine Bard and Michael Evans -- ESP's other two members -- also play in Pugliese's group Soultronix. In 1998, Pugliese was selected as Artist in Residence at Harvestworks in N.Y.C. where he recorded his solo CD Sonic Soul. ~ Joslyn Layne, All Music Guide

Jim Pugliese (born James Pugliese in Newark, New Jersey, 1952) is an American percussionist, drummer, composer and international recording artist on over seventy five CDs of experimental, jazz and rock music.

Jim’s performing experience is diverse. As a freelance percussionist he is in much demand and has performed with The New York Philharmonic Horizon Series (guest artist), New York City Ballet and soloist or performer on numerous new music and jazz festivals in Europe, Japan and the USA. Jim has recorded and or performed with John Cage, Kent Nagano and Philip Glass among others. For the last fifteen years, while living in the East Village of New York City, Jim has been performing and recording with many of downtown New York’s most prominent composer/improvisers including John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Zeena Parkins and Anthony Coleman. His newest projects “Phase III” and” Italian Doc Remix” are a continuation of his ongoing quest to combine his diverse performing experiences into a single new sound with its base in rhythm and to further enhance cultural exchange through music. His music skirts and shifts along the edges of free improvisation, jazz and deep groove. The music reflects Jim’s ongoing quest to explore the powerful, enlightening and spiritual secrets of drumming and is inspired by his recent association and work with Nii Tettey Tetteh, master musician from Ghana, with Milford Graves, learning drumming and healing through the heartbeat and his study of the spiritual songs of the Mbira Dzavadzimu from Zimbabwe.
