Joachim II (1505-71, Köpenick), in full Joachim Hektor, succeeded his father Joachim I in 1535, and in 1539 went over to the Reformation. A man of culture and taste, he was also an extravagant builder, and his activities severely burdened the finances of Brandenburg. The establishment of Berlin as the permanent electoral residence (and thus as capital) dates from his reign.
