Joel I. Klein is the Chancellor of the New York Department of Education, in charge of the city's public school system. Raised in NYC, Klein has a background in education, law and business.
Prior to his appointment in 2002, he was the chairman and CEO of Bertelsmann, Inc., and chief US liaison officer to Bertelsmann AG, one of the world's largest media companies. Before that he had worked his way up in the US Department of Justice to the position of assistant attorney general in charge of the department's antitrust division. As head of the 700-lawyer division, Klein led landmark cases against Microsoft, WorldCom/Sprint, Visa/Mastercard, and General Electric. He had also served for two years (1993-95) as deputy counsel to President Bill Clinton. Having worked in private and public law positions in Washington, DC, for some 20 years, he specialized in health care, constitutional litigation and appellate advocacy.
Klein has taught at the Georgetown University Law Center and has published several articles in both scholarly and popular journals. Active in community service, he has served on the board of several non-profit organizations, worked in Big Brothers, and served as treasurer of the World Federation for Mental Health and as chairman of the board of Green Door, a community-based treatment program for mentally ill residents in Washington, DC. Klein graduated magna cum laude/Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University in 1967. He went on to earn his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1971, again graduating magna cum laude.
