Johann August Apel

Apel, Johann August (Leipzig, 1771-1816, Leipzig), became a lawyer and later a librarian in Leipzig. With F. A. Schulze, he published a large collection of ghost stories (Gespensterbuch, 1810-17), one of which is the basis of Weber's opera Der Freischütz. His early plays (Polyidos, 1805; Die Aitolier, 1806; Kallirhöe, 1806) were in the classical manner.

Johann August Apel (september 17, 1771August 9, 1816) was a German writer and jurist.

Apel was born in Leipzig. His tale Die Jägerbraut formed the basis for the libretto of Der Freischütz.
