German Literature Companion:

Johann Baptist von Alxinger

Alxinger, Johann Baptist von (Vienna, 1755-97, Vienna), became in 1796 secretary of the Burgtheater. A representative of the Aufklärung, he pleaded in verse and journalism for freedom of thought. His Gedichte (1780 and 1784) were collected in 2 vols. in 1788. His principal works are two verse romances with medieval settings in which he embodied the ideals of the Freemasons. Doolin von Mainz (1787) has as its background the world of Charlemagne; Bliomberis (1791) is an Arthurian romance. His Sämtliche Werke (10 vols.) appeared in 1812.
