Johann Wilhelm von Archenholz
Archenholz, Johann Wilhelm von (Langfuhr, Danzig, 1743-1812, Hamburg), a German historian, was first an officer, serving in the later campaigns of the Seven Years War (see Siebenjähriger Krieg), sustaining wounds and retiring in 1763 as a captain. After travelling extensively in Europe, Archenholz settled in 1780 in Magdeburg where he set up as a publicist, founding the periodical Litteratur- und Völkerkunde, which ran from 1782 to 1791. His England und Italien (1785) presents a balanced account of countries he had visited. He became known as a historian through the 20 vols. of Annalen der britischen Geschichte (1789-98) and his Geschichte des siebenjährigen Krieges (1787). From 1792 until his death he lived near Hamburg, editing the learned journal Minerva.
