John Barnwell

Barnwell, John (c. 1671-1724) colonial agent, militiaman, Indian fighter, born in Ireland. . As a colonel in the Tuscarora War (1711-12), Barnwell led the South Carolina expedition of 1711-12 to quell the uprising, earning a reputation as South Carolina's foremost Indian fighter and the nickname “Tuscarora Jack.” As a representative of the colony in London (1720), he convinced the Board of Trade to accept South Carolina as a royal colony. He constructed Fort King George on the Altamaha River at Darien, the beginning of the state of Georgia.
