John Beckwith

(b Victoria, bc, 9 March 1927). Canadian composer and teacher. He studied in Toronto and with Boulanger in Paris (1950-52); in 1961 he began teaching at Toronto University. His large and eclectic output includes Music for Dancing (1948) and the opera The Shivaree (1982, Toronto). He has written extensively on Canadian music.
