US Military Dictionary: John Cadwalader

Cadwalader, John kædˈwälǝdǝr (1742-86) Revolutionary War soldier, born in Philadelphia. Appointed brigadier general of the Pennsylvania militia, Cadwalader fought in the battle of Princeton and as a volunteer at Brandywine and Germantown (all 1777).

Cadwalader fought a duel on July 4, 1778, with Thomas Conway, who had been accused of plotting to remove Washington from command (the “Conway Cabal”).
