(1880-1962) army chief of the Western Defense Command who directed the removal of Japanese Americans from their homes on the West Coast to internment camps, as called for by presidential executive order. De Witt was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (1918) for exceptional service in World War I. He served as Quartermaster General from 1930 to 1934. He was commandant of the Army and Navy Staff College in Washington (1943). De Witt was promoted to rank of full general by Congress in 1954.
