1776 | The Fall of the British Tyranny; or, American Liberty Triumphant. Considered the earliest American chronicle play and the first to portray George Washington in a drama, Leacock's sprawling drama depicts the opening of the Revolution. It includes the Battle of Lexington and warfare in Virginia, with descriptions of many of the participants, including Hutchinson, Gage, Howe, and Burgoyne. There is no record that the play was ever produced. It is believed that Leacock was a Philadelphia silversmith, one of the Sons of Liberty, and an associate of John Dickinson and Benjamin Franklin. |
