Architecture and Landscaping:

John Maclane Johansen

(1916– )

American architect. He worked with Breuer and Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill before establishing an office in 1948. At the circular Chancellery for the US Embassy, Dublin (1958–64), he employed the geometry of a continuous wave made of elegant precast concrete frames. Around the same time he experimented with the fragmentation of form, the climax of which was the Mummers' Theater, Oklahoma City (1970–1), actually three theatres loosely linked together by tubes containing passages and services, perhaps influenced by images of Archigram, Constructivism, and Brutalism. Other works include the Johansen House, Stamfordville, NY (1974), the Ellsworth House, Salisbury, CT (1976), and the Barna House, Bedford, NY (1979).
