John [Martin] Anster

Anster, John [Martin] (1793-1867), poet and scholar. Born in Charleville, Co. Cork, he was educated at TCD, where he eventually became Regius Professor of Civil Law. His verse translation of the first part of Goethe's Faust as Faustus: A Dramatic Mystery (1835) was acclaimed immediately. The second part followed in 1864. Xeniola (1851) was a collection of poetry.
