Biography

Guitarist John Lombardo, a founding member of 10,000 Maniacs, and Mary Ramsey, a classically trained violinist from the age of five, formed as a duo in Buffalo. Lombardo's rock inspiration and Ramsey's folk and classical influences made them a popular local act. With production help from Mitch Easter, John & Mary recorded Victory Gardens in 1990; it was released the following year. The follow-up, The Weedkiller's Daughter, featured contributors Alex Chilton and Robert Buck (from 10,000 Maniacs). After Natalie Merchant left 10,000 Maniacs in 1994, John & Mary joined the group. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

John and Mary is a U.S. folk music act featuring Mary Ramsey and John Lombardo, formed after Lombardo left 10,000 Maniacs in 1986 due to "creative and political" disagreements with the band. The pair were the opening act for the Maniacs on the Hope Chest Tour in 1990. They released the albums Victory Gardens in 1991, and The Weedkiller's Daughter in 1993. Both joined (or re-joined) the Maniacs as full-time members in 1994, after Natalie Merchant's departure. They released The Pinwheel Galaxy in September 2002.

After the death of the Maniacs' lead guitar player Rob Buck (who was replaced by Jeff Erickson) in December 2000, Ramsey was replaced with singer Oskar Saville from the Chicago-based band Rubygrass. Lombardo quit the group and it went on as a 5-piece until Ramsey was rehired as a viola player and backing vocalist for the 2006 shows.

John & Mary released a CD, "Peace Bridge," with their current band The Valkyries in 2007.
