Biography

For performers, success can be about something more than just financial windfalls. A guitarist and songwriter may simply want the public at large to know who he and his band are, specifically, to be able to say "This is John Mitchell from Siberia" and not get a response along the lines of "Huh?" Before even bothering with the former extremely common name, it should be mentioned that the Siberia in this case is a progressive rock band from New York City, not the frigid part of the former Soviet Union or a dance club that was the in thing for about five days. Mitchell and female cohort Randy Farmer are the creative nucleus behind this group, which by 2004 had put out two discs, the latest entitled Harm's Way.

While probably nobody named John Mitchell caused more harm than the former attorney general under Richard Nixon, Siberia's John Mitchell also should not be mistaken for the banjoist and guitarist of the same name whose career began in the '20s and included a stint in a Nazi prison camp. There are other guitarists named John Mitchell as well, one in a vintage hillbilly band, another playing in art rock outfits such as Arena. Siberia came out of the New York City rock scene circa the early new millennium, but after garnering attention for live performances in typical venues including CBGB's, the group became a subject of interest well beyond the shadow of the Empire State Building. Consolidating the resumés of bandmembers as well as Siberia's two record producers results in a list of music business connections that include John Mayer, Phil Collins, Iggy Pop, and the Band of Susans. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide

Career

Early Career

As a pupil at New Plymouth's Francis Douglas Memorial College he made the first XV and he was a member of the NZ secondary schools basketball team from 1981-83. He represented NZ Juniors in basketball in 1982-83, but then decided to concentrate on rugby.

Provincial

He made his Waikato senior debut in 1985 and played at number eight, blindside flanker and lock before he became firmly established at number eight. Equal top scorer in first division rugby in 1989-90, he thus scored more tries over these seasons than any other NZ first division player.

Mitchell was given the Waikato captaincy in 1989. In 1990, because of a broken leg, he could only play half the games. He was reappointed captain in 1991 and led magnificently from that time on until his retirement just prior to the start of the 1995 season. He captained the side a record 86 times. Overall he played 134 games for Waikato and scored 67 tries. In the off season, Mitchell played club rugby in France and Ireland.

Coaching

Mitchell coached in England, including a stint as England's assistant coach. He was appointed coach of the Chiefs' Super 12 side for 2001, and on 3 October 2001 was appointed as All Black coach through to the 2003 World Cup.

The All Blacks disappointing results in the 2003 World Cup played a part in Mitchell not regaining the All Blacks coaching position when the NZRFU called for candidates for the position. Mitchell has since taken up the position of the Waikato NPC coach, which he held for the 2004 season, and in mid 2005 was successful in taking up the role of coach for the Australian expansion side, The Western Force, for the 2006 Super 14 competition. John Mitchell recently handed out the Springoks jerseys before they played the Wallabies at Subiaco oval in Austust 2009.
