Ogilby, John (1600-1676), born in Edinburgh, founder of the Theatre Royal at Werburgh Street, Dublin, the first permanent playhouse in Ireland. Ogilby arrived in 1633 as a member of the household of the Viceroy, Thomas Wentworth, and was created Master of Revels. In 1635 he recruited the dramatist James Shirley to write plays and prologues for the new theatre.
