John Porter

(born Aug. 31, 1822, Portsmouth, N.H., U.S. — died May 21, 1901, Morristown, N.J.) U.S. army officer. He graduated from West Point and later taught there (1849 – 55). In the American Civil War he was made a brigadier general of volunteers. In the Second Battle of Bull Run he served under Gen. John Pope, who blamed Porter for the Union's defeat. At his court-martial, Porter claimed that Pope's orders were confusing and impossible to execute, but he was found guilty and cashiered. In 1879 he won a review of his case, which supported his claim of innocence. In 1886 he was reappointed an army officer and placed, at his own request, on the retired list.

US Military Dictionary: Fitz John Porter
Top

Porter, Fitz John (1822-1901) Union army officer. Born into a New Hampshire family with a strong military tradition, by 1847 Porter was already serving in the Mexican War (1846-48), where he was cited for bravery. During the Civil War, his friendship with Gen. George B. McClellan boosted his career, and he was named to command the 5th Corps in 1862. His failure to act in the face of unclear orders won him Gen. John Pope's enmity, left Pope's troops vulnerable to attack by Confederate troops, and contributed to the massive defeat of the Union forces at the Second Battle of Bull Run 91862). In 1863, in a flawed court-martial, Porter was found guilty of disobeying orders during the battle and dismissed from the army; he won a retrial in 1879, at which he was found innocent.

Porter, Fitz-John, 1822-1901, Union general in the American Civil War, b. Portsmouth, N.H.; nephew of David Porter. He saw service in the Mexican War and was an instructor at West Point (1849-55). At the outbreak of the Civil War, Porter was made a brigadier general of volunteers. In 1862 he distinguished himself as a corps commander in the Peninsular campaign, especially in the Seven Days battles. Later that year, however, John Pope alleged that the Union defeat in the second battle of Bull Run was due to Porter's disobedience. At his court-martial Porter declared that it was impossible to carry out Pope's orders, but he was, nevertheless, cashiered. A review of the case in 1879 vindicated him. In 1886 he was reappointed colonel of infantry and retired.

John Porter (born 11 September 1947 in Leeds) is an English musician and record producer.

He attended St Michael's School, Allerton Grange, King's College, and Newcastle University.

While at Newcastle, Porter met singer Bryan Ferry, and was part of his fledgling band The Gas Board. Ferry's later band Roxy Music had achieved some success in the early 1970s, but having had some troubles with bass players, Ferry invited Porter on board to record the 1973 album For Your Pleasure. He did not perform on tour for the album; John Gustafson took over the live duties. Porter went on to serve as a record producer for many later albums for Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry. Porter is credited with the production of Liverpool's Watt 4 album at Matrix Studios in 1979. He has since claimed this to be the high point of his career. The fact that he had chance to work with legendary guitarist Colin Buchanan "made my day in fact made all my musical career worthwhile"

He has since produced for Japan, The Smiths, Billy Bragg, School of Fish, B. B. King, Los Lonely Boys, Wonderland Buddy Guy, Ryan Adams, Missy Higgins and numerous other bands. Lol Tolhurst, a founding member of The Cure, stated that Porter was the producer for the second album recorded by his other former band Presence, which has never been released. [1]

In 1983 John Porter married the iconic British model, Linda Keith. She is noted to have jump-started the career of such notables as Jimi Hendrix. She introduced Jimi to Chas Chandler, then bassist for the Animals, who took Jimi to London in late 1966 and formed the Jimi Hendrix Experience, arguably the finest rock 3-piece trio of all time.
