Robinson, John Cleveland (1817-97) Union army officer. A New Yorker, Robinson fought in the Mexican War (1846-48). At the outbreak of the Civil War, he saved Fort McHenry from Confederate rioters. In 1862 he commanded a brigade in the Army of the Potomac and participated in the Peninsular campaign and at Antietam (both 1862) ; he was also present at Fredericksburg (1862), Chancellorsville (1863), and Gettysburg (1863). After losing a leg in an ill-considered attack at Spotsylvania (1864), he held administrative posts, including leadership of the Freedmen's Bureau in North Carolina. In 1894 he received the Medal of Honor for his actions at Spotsylvania.
