Biography

Best known for playing Bo Duke on the hit TV series The Dukes of Hazzard, John Schneider also maintained a parallel secondary career as a country singer for much of the '80s. Born in Mt. Kisco, NY, in 1960, Schneider grew up in Atlanta and started acting at the age of eight; he also learned guitar, and as a teenager he entertained at parties and other social events. He loved auto racing and briefly attempted to become a professional, and that experience helped him land his co-starring role on The Dukes of Hazzard in 1979. He remained with the series until its cancellation in 1985, with a brief interruption due to a contract walkout in 1982, and also appeared in several films and TV-movies. Meanwhile, Schneider recorded a country album called Now or Never for Scotti Bros. in 1981. It was a Top Ten hit on the country charts, and the single "It's Now or Never" made the Top Five on both the country and adult contemporary charts, just missing the pop Top Ten. The holiday album White Christmas followed, and Schneider went on to sign with MCA, issuing five albums from 1984-1987. He scored four number one singles during that time: "I've Been Around Enough to Know" (1984), "Country Girls" (1985), "What's a Memory Like You (Doing in a Love Like This)," and "You're the Last Thing I Needed Tonight" (both 1986). He also managed five other Top Ten hits, and one of his LPs, 1986's A Memory Like You, topped the country charts. Schneider kept his acting career going with a variety of guest starring roles on television, plus a few films, and appeared in a couple of Dukes of Hazzard reunion projects. He returned to the spotlight in 2001, when he landed the role of Clark Kent's father on the popular WB series Smallville. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Biography

In order to land the part of Bo Duke in the TV series The Dukes of Hazzard, John Schneider adopted a Cracker dialect and shambling good-ole-boy manner, claiming that he hailed from the tiny -- and fictional -- community of Snailville, Georgia. In fact, Schneider was born in Upstate New York, and was raised in Atlanta by his mom. During his teen years, Schneider picked up spending money by working as an entertainer at parties and public events, playing the guitar, telling jokes and performing a magic trick or two. He briefly attended the Georgia School of High Performance, hoping to become a race-car driver. His prowess behind the wheel enabled him to land his Dukes of Hazzard job, which he held down from 1979 to 1985, save for a brief 1982 walkout due to contract dispute. Schneider's Hazzard success allowed him to have both a recording career as a country music artist, and an ongoing presence on the small screen. In addition to numerous made-for-TV movies, he had a recurring role on the popular program Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Schneider gained a whole new legion of fans as the Earth father of Superman when he began playing Jonathan Kent on the teen-oriented superhero series Smallville in 2001. He returned to the big screen with a starring role in 2006's Collier & Co., which he also directed. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

John Schneider has recorded 10 albums to date, including works on Scotti Brothers Records and MCA Nashville. His co-star (on The Dukes of Hazzard), Tom Wopat, also enjoyed success on the country music charts. Schneider and Wopat sang several duets on the TV series, sometimes with co-star Catherine Bach. In fact, in the season 7 DVD boxset, the trio performed a remake of the show's theme song "Good Ol' Boys" in a music video as a tribute to their friend Waylon Jennings.

Personal life

Schneider became a born-again Christian after living with Johnny and June Carter Cash for a short time and speaking with Johnny about Christianity.[1] In 1982, he co-founded, with Marie Osmond, the Children's Miracle Network to help suffering children. In 1995, he founded FaithWorks Productions in order to produce family-oriented videos and recordings.

Schneider has recently become involved in animal advocacy. He read from Karen Dawn's book Thanking the Monkey: Rethinking The Way We Treat Animals at its New York book launch. In a Washington Post Article he discussed the effects of the book and the people he met through the event on his life.[2] He was moved to record a video in which he talks of his shock upon learning about the way animals are treated by human society, which is available on YouTube and on the book's website.[3]

Both of John's parents are from a German-American background.[citation needed] Schneider is the father of three children: daughters Leah and Karis, and son Chasen, who has Asperger syndrome.[4] Schneider spends much of his spare time raising awareness and money for the research and treatment of Asperger syndrome. He has been married twice: currently to Elly Castle (July 11, 1993–present) and was married once before to former Miss America, Tawny Elaine Godin (1983–1986)

Schneider recently sold his "General Lee" (Dodge Charger on Barrett-Jackson car auction) to a Markwood car dealer and collector in Hardy County, West Virginia. On March 12, 2008 John was present in Moorefield, West Virginia to sign over the car and give autographs to fans. Schneider has recently produced, directed, and starred in his own film series, Collier and Company. He has great relations with his fans, even going to the point of hiring them to help with his film-maker career, such examples are Derek Russel and Grahm Hancock from the Smallville Podcast "Starkville House of El", and has appeared in interviews on the show, and had a cameo in the podcasts 50 1/2 episode celebration, "Banished", and occasionly solicites his roles on the podcast.
