Biography

John Wetton has had one of the most varied careers in progressive rock. He has played in the majority of the big names in prog, in many cases in their classic lineups. His first major band experience came when he joined Family in 1971. He was featured on two of their albums: 1971's Fearless and Bandstand (released the following year). He performed various functions in the group, but his primary role was as bassist. Previous to this group he had recorded with Edward's Hand and Mogul Thrash. He left Family to join Robert Fripp and company in King Crimson, taking a place that had been previously filled by Greg Lake. This would not be the last time the two of them would replace one another. His tenure with that group was not exceptionally long, however, as Fripp disbanded Crimson in 1975. Wetton did, however, contribute to several classic Crimson discs (Larks' Tongues in Aspic [1973], Red [1974], Starless and Bible Black, and USA [1975]). Many Crimson fans consider this to be the ultimate era of the group.

Wetton's next move was to Roxy Music, a venture that he actually began while still with King Crimson. In fact, during his KC time he managed to work on several side projects. These projects included two albums with former Yes guitarist Peter Banks; an album with Gordon Haskell; and one each with Eno, Phil Manzanera, Peter Sinfield, and Bryan Ferry. It was Ferry, the founder of Roxy Music, who invited him to join that group. Wetton toured with them in 1975 and that tour resulted in a live album that was released the following year.

Seemingly not one to stay in one place for very long, Wetton hooked up with Uriah Heep in 1975, recording Return to Fantasy with them that year and High and Mighty the following year. When he left that group, he hooked up with Bill Bruford and Rick Wakeman to form a new group. That one never got off the ground, but Bruford and Wetton kept working together, creating UK. During this formative period, though, he worked on three Bryan Ferry albums and one by Duncan Mackay. The first UK disc was released in 1978. In total he was featured on three albums with the group: that self-titled release, Danger Money, and the live album Night After Night. Both of the latter albums were released in 1979. Even while working with that band, he managed to find the time to record with Jack Knife and Phil Manzanera on the side.

1980 saw, among other things, the beginning of Wetton's solo career. His first solo disc, Caught in the Crossfire, was released that year. During the period of 1980 to 1981 he played on two albums by Roger Chapman, one by Philip Rambow, and a Wishbone Ash disc. In 1982 he hooked up with Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes, and Steve Howe to form Asia. Their self-titled debut was released that year. He also put in a performance on another Phil Manzanera album that year. The following year saw the release of the second Asia disc, Alpha. After that album, Wetton left the group for a short time, replaced by Greg Lake. Lake did a tour with the group, but then Wetton came back into the fold. He stayed with the group through their next release, 1985's Astra.

In 1987 he hooked up with Phil Manzanera again to record Wetton/Manzanera. The next few years were quiet for Wetton, with his next projects not coming until 1990. That year he was featured on another Manzanera disc and two releases by Asia. The following year he released his next solo album, Jacknife. The next few years saw little activity by the bassist/vocalist, until 1994. That year saw his next solo release, Voice Mail, and Aria by Asia. 1995, however, gave birth to no less than three new Wetton albums: two live ones (Chasing: Live in Japan and Live: Chasing the Dragon) and one studio (Battle Lines). The following year Wetton put out another live album, Akustika: Live in Amerika. 1997 came around and saw Wetton working with David Cross and Steve Hackett on two albums. He also put out two albums with Phil Manzanera. Two more live discs came out in 1999 (Live in New York and Live at the Sun Plaza Tokyo). He also worked with Steve Hackett on Darktown and Ian McDonald on Driver's Eyes. Even with all of those projects he still found time to record another studio release of his own, Arkangel.

The year 2000 saw Wetton again working with Carl Palmer, forming a new group called Qango. They released their first album, Live in the Hood, that same year, and Wetton still found time to play on the album Martin Darvill and Friends Greatest Show on Earth. ~ Gary Hill, All Music Guide

John Kenneth Wetton (born 12 June 1949) is an English singer, bass guitarist and guitarist.

Born in Willington, Derbyshire, Wetton grew up in Bournemouth, Dorset. He has been a professional singer/songwriter/musician since the late 1960s as a member of such progressive rock bands as Mogul Thrash, Family, King Crimson (working with childhood friend Robert Fripp), Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry band, Uriah Heep, UK and Wishbone Ash. Wetton found worldwide fame in 1982 with the band Asia, whose self-titled debut album sold millions and became Billboard magazine's #1 album of 1982.

Career

Wetton has achieved an original bass guitar sound utilising a 1961 Fender Precision Bass amplified through tubes. The sound is overdriven and very aggressive. This style and approach was particularly evident during his stint with King Crimson from 1972 until 1974. Known initially for his powerful bass guitar sound, Wetton's vocal and songwriting abilities garnered attention with his work in the band Asia in the early 1980s. Early recorded highlights of Wetton's career include King Crimson's Larks' Tongues In Aspic (1973), Starless and Bible Black (1974), Red (1974), UK's self-titled album (1978) (reuniting the King Crimson rhythm section of Wetton and Bill Bruford) and Asia's self-titled album (1982), the last being the biggest seller of his career. In 1986 he contributed also to Phenomena II and had a #1 hit with the single "Did It All For Love" in South America. Since the early 1990s, Wetton has released four solo albums (Voice Mail/Battle Lines, Arkangel, Sinister/Welcome to Heaven, and Rock of Faith), and a number of live recordings from his solo tours around the world. Wetton also created the ICON project with fellow Asia bandmate Geoff Downes. The duo recorded two studio albums of original material (ICON and ICON II/Rubicon) and one live album (Never in a Million Years) from their ICON European tour.

Wetton has done extensive work as a session musician with acts such as Brian Eno, Bryan Ferry and Phil Manzanera.[1] Through his connection with George Martin, Wetton also played bass on Only Visiting This Planet by Larry Norman, recorded in 1972 and produced by Martin. The album has been voted "The Best Contemporary Christian Album of All Time" by Contemporary Christian Music magazine.[2] He also played bass on the 1973 Malcolm and Alwyn gospel beat music album Fool's Wisdom, another Larry Norman connection.

Wetton rejoined the other original members of Asia (Downes, Steve Howe and Carl Palmer) in early 2006 to announce a 25th anniversary world tour. This line-up performed a series of dates in the United States in September 2006, and in the United Kingdom in November/December 2006. The band also spent much of 2007 on the road, with shows in North and South America, Europe and Asia. A new Asia studio album titled Phoenix, the original band's first since 1983's Alpha, was released in April 2008 and peaked at #73 on the North American Top 200 albums charts.[3]

Personal life

Wetton has struggled with alcoholism in the past. While on tour in 1983, Asia replaced him with bassist and vocalist Greg Lake (previously of Emerson, Lake & Palmer and also a King Crimson alumni), because of his drinking problem. Wetton has been sober since June 2005.[4]

In August 2007 Wetton underwent heart surgery which placed the remainder of Asia's 2007 tour and recording plans on hold until he recovered. The band, including Wetton, released their new album entitled Phoenix worldwide in April 2008. Artist Roger Dean was commissioned to create the cover art. This release was followed by a world tour.

Wetton is left-handed but plays bass and guitar right-handed.[citation needed]
