TV.com summary

Johnny Test is an animated television series on Kids' WB, and currently airs at 10:30am. It premiered on September 17, 2005. Nine months later, it was introduced to Cartoon Network UK on January 14, 2006 and then on June 5, 2006, shown every day. It also airs on Teletoon in Canada. The show chronicles the adventures of an average suburban boy, who wittingly plays test subject for his genius twin sisters' various experiments, reluctantly fighting evil villains in the process.

Plot

This show features a boy named Johnny who lives with his sisters Susan and Mary in the Test residence in the town of Porkbelly. Susan and Mary come up with experiments to win the heart of the next-door neighbor, Gil, but they use Johnny as a test subject for their experiments. Johnny also has a super talking dog named Dukey. Johnny likes to take Dukey places, but has to disguise him as a kid. Lila Test (the Mother) works like the stereotypical father, and Hugh Test (the Father) is obsessed with meatloaf and extreme cleanliness. However, the only recurring evil force at work is Eugene, who apparently changed his name to "Bling-Bling Boy", and is after a specific date with Susan, even though she has absolutely no interest in him. Other villains include The X-Treme Teen Team, who love anything that says "extreme", and the Mole King, who hates light. This show has a similar visual style and tone of Nickelodeon's The Fairly OddParents, Cartoon Network's Dexter's Laboratory or Robotboy, and The Disney Channel's Kim Possible, although the name is almost certainly a reference to Jonny Quest. The show was created by Scott Fellows, also creator and Exec Producer of Nickelodeon's "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide".

Production History

The first season was produced in-house at Warner Bros. Animation. Some episodes were storyboarded by Atomic Cartoons in Canada. The merger of UPN and The WB Into The CW resulted in many budget cuts for the show, and resulted in cancellation. Cookie Jar Entertainment, based in Canada, decided to take control of the show, turning it into a U.S./Canada co-production. Due to this change, the writers, storyboarders, and art crew who worked on the first season were let go, resulting in an entirely new crew managing the show. In addition, the budget of the show dropped dramatically, leading to the show being animated in Adobe Flash. Now it's a Teletoon original production.

  • Jonathan "Johnny" Test

A young boy who seems to always get in trouble. Because he has two genius sisters, he can live any kids dream, only to find that some dreams aren't worth living. He is very hyperactive and kind of stupid, and his actions often lead to the entire town of Porkbelly being destroyed. He, his sisters, and his talking dog once even got on his town's most wanted list. Johnny has an alter ego that he calls "Johnny X", even though it sounds almost exactly like his original name. Johnny X is a superhero that has the power of hurricane hands (speeding wind from his hands), shapeshifting, and power poots (powerful farts that create fire) and uses them at the end of every episode that they are introduced in. Johnny also gains the power to set himself on fire in the third season. Wherever he goes, destruction and chaos always follow him. He is voiced by Louis Chorillo.

  • Dukey

Johnny's talking dog and best friend. He used to be a very disgusting dog. However, Susan and Mary enhanced him. Since then, he can both fetch the paper, and has the ability to read it. He is often the voice of reason to Johnny, but winds up getting manipulated into supporting Johnny's crazy schemes and adventures (usually because of steak). His dog habits greatly annoy Johnny's sisters, Mary and Susan. Duky also has a secret identity called "Super Pooch". When in "Super Pooch" form Dukey can fly and(in the third season) has shapeshifting powers. In "Safari Johnny", it is revealed that Dukey was a smelly dog whom Johnny picked because he said he felt a bond and loved him. He has the power to fly as a sidekick (to Johnny) but usually crashes into something when landing. He seems to be a very loyal dog but bails when steak is involved. He is voiced by James Arnold Taylor.

  • Mary and Susan Test

Johnny's genius older twin sisters who have him test out their inventions. They always get tricked by him into getting Johnny into the lab or manipulated into doing tasks for him. Their Father grounds them as much as Johnny because there inventions always cause chaos. (Johnny sometimes uses this as a threat for blackmailing them.)
Note: The design of both characters resembles another Cartoon Network character, Dexter, from Dexter's Laboratory. Both Girls use black rimmed lenses, and lab clothes. Their hair is red also. Voice by Maryke Hendrikse (Susan) and Brittney Wilson (Mary).

  • Mr. Hugh Test

Father of Johnny, Susan and Mary, and the husband of Lila Test. Mr. Test's two biggest obsessions are cleaning and cooking meatloaf. He is voiced by Ian James Corlett.

  • Mrs. Lila Test

Mother of Johnny, Susan, and Mary. Wife of Hugh Test. She is a businesswomen and enjoys relaxing with her husband. She is voiced by Kathleen Barr.

  • Eugene/"Bling-Bling Boy"

The main antagonist and friendly enemy of Johnny and Dukey, preferring to go by name of "Bling-Bling Boy" (because of the gold jewelry and watches he wears), who has a crush on Susan, who doesn't reciprocate his feelings. He occasionally teams up with Johnny and Dukey to defeat the other villains. He seems to be good friends with Johnny and Dukey, despite being a main antagonist of the series. He once received the power to turn things into gold. He's a multi-millionaire. He is voiced by Lee Tockar.

  • Gil

Susan and Mary's crush (who doesn't even know they exist, or forgets they exist even though they've met many times, and even have lived next door to him for many years) and other friend of Johnny (whenever Gil appears when Johnny is around, he quotes, "Hey, Johnny!"). He seems to be a sidekick to the Tests and once got the power to grow his hair to make extra hands. He is voiced by Scott Fellows.

  • Mr. White and Mr. Black

The Buff and Tough Secret Agents. They may be friends with Johnny, his sisters and Dukey, but either way, since they are secret agents, they're always antagonizing them. Especially when they were put on the Porkbelly's Most Wanted List as #1. They are alias to them and aren't afraid of anything (although on some occasions, that's only what they say). They are voiced by Ian James Corlett (Mr. White) and Phil LaMarr (Mr. Black).

  • Janet Nelson

Johnny's crush at school. She has a love-hate relationship with him, but she is too popular to express the love part. Johnny thinks he hates her. She is voiced by Kathleen Barr.

  • Sissy

A girl who has a crush on Johnny but tends to hide it very well through bullying him and asserting superiority over him, and Johnny also seems to have a small crush on her. However, the two are constantly competing against each other. If Sissy beats him, she'll brag about it. If Johnny wins, he'll either get caught into a situation because of it, or brag as much as her. In one episode, Johnny pretends to get used to being bullied by Sissy and they fall in love with each other along with Dukey and Missy. She seems to be the victim to the shows twists, adventures, and mis-adventures at the end of the episodes that she appears in. She is voiced by Maryke Hendikse.

  • Missy

Sissy's dog, who is to Dukey what Sissy is to Johnny. Dukey may have a crush on her rather than steak. She has a crush on him. Dukey may hate her less or more then Johnny hates Sissy. Which is very confusing, so don't think about it so much. She is voiced by Brittney Wilson.
