Finnish: variant of Joki ‘river’ + the common surname suffix -nen. In some instances Jokinen arose as a family name from the farm name Jokela.Later, during the name conversion movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was widely adopted as an ornamental name by Finns, especailly as a replacement for Swedish surnames ending in -ström ‘river’.
