History
JUST is a fast growing and dynamic university. Though young, the University has expanded dramatically since its inception in 1986. JUST figures speak for themselves. A total of 2,300 students were enrolled in 1986. Now about 22,000 undergraduate students and 1559 graduate students are enrolled at the University. Each year the University grants over 3000 Bachelor and Master Degrees. The University started with 110 faculty members; now it hosts 750 faculty, of which 109 are full professors. The steady enrolment of the student body is grounded on the University's vision to raise and maintain the standards of higher education in Jordan, in parallel with national educational policies. Having its roots at Yarmouk University in Irbid, JUST emerged as an independent university on September, 1st, 1986.
JUST detached five faculties from Yarmouk University to form its academic nucleus. These faculties were: Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Nursing and Faculty of Engineering. Consecutively added to these faculties are Faculty of Science and Arts, Faculty of Medical Applied Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Computer and Information Technology, and Faculty of Agriculture.
JUST employs all possible means to remain a forefront institution amongst Jordanian universities. JUST leading theme is serving the national economy through qualifying graduates with the potentials to contribute to the productivity of the local industry, be it in the fields of medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, engineering, agriculture, veterinary medicine, computer science or natural sciences. The University has always remained true to its sense of community and social responsibility for which it was founded. This is the place where theory and practice are united, and where scientific traditions and academic innovations meet. Our programs are not mere disciplines but fields of practice that are created and designed to qualify students for their prospective careers through which they can serve the community at large.
Campus
The JUST campus is located approximately 20 km east of Irbid in northern Jordan and covers an area of approximately 11 km². In addition to academic buildings and the JUST Library, the campus includes athletic facilities including a 7000-seat soccer stadium.
Jordan University of Science and Technology is also home to King Abdullah Universitarian Hospital, the 683-bed teaching hospital affiliated with JUST and its medical faculties.
The university contains two main campuses, known as: the Medicine Faculties Building and the Engineering Faculties Building. Students can use available buses to move from one campus to the other. And there is also a mini train which is not often used. But since the distance between the two isn't relatively that long many prefer walking.
There are two libraries: one in the Engineering Faculties Building and the other is in the Medicine Faculties Building. While both libraries give the students an appropriate and suitable place for reading and studying, the two-floor library at the Medicine Faculties Building, which is relatively larger, also contains 115,000 books, and 45,000 volumes of back issues of periodicals. which makes it the main library at this university.[3] Currently, a new library is being built at the area between the Engineering Faculties Building and the Medicine Faculties Building which is larger than both existing Aside from the employees and guests restaurants, there are also three restaurant for the student: One in each main campus, and one located near the soccer stadium. In addition, the Medicine Faculties Building contains a mini market where students can find items which they may not find in restaurants.
Every department has a computer lab for the students to use. There are also two open labs one in each campus. Moreover, six additional labs are available for the graduate, undergraduate computer science students and students who are taking computer science courses at the PH building located at the Medicine Faculties Building.
Of the many universities gates, only two gates are probably the most familiar in the eyes of the students which are: the main gate and the Engineering Faculties Building's gate. The main gate, which is newer than the other, leads nearly to the middle of the way between the two main campuses. The other gate leads to the Engineering Faculties Building directly.
The campus is covered by a wireless internet connection in order to provide the students, faculty members and researcher with the richness of the internet and to help make the largest source of information in this world accessible anytime and anywhere at the university campus.[4] Media:
