Joseph Brown
(1733–85)
American amateur architect. He designed several important buildings at Providence, RI, including the First Baptist Meeting House (1774–5), the spire of which is based on the illustrations in Gibbs's Book of Architecture (1728). Among his other works are University Hall (1770–1), the Market House (1773–7), and the Brown House (1786–8).
