Biography
Cinematographer Joe MacDonald was born to American parents in Mexico City. He joined the film industry in the early 1920s as an assistant cameraman; by the early 1940s he had been promoted to director of photography where he became known for his excellent photography with both black-and-white and color film. Legacy
At the time of the release of his most widely seen movie, How to Marry a Millionaire, no widescreen movies were being produced in Mexico, and in fact several years passed before such movies would be produced in that country. In addition, MacDonald was the first Mexican-born cinematographer to be Oscar nominated.
