(b Khar′kov, 31 Aug 1895; d New York, 23 March 1943). American theorist of Ukrainian origin. He studied at the Petrograd Conservatory (1914-18) and worked in Russia as a teacher and composer. In 1928 he moved to the USA, where he taught theory according to his own quasi-mathematical system; Gershwin, Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller were among his pupils.
