(b Detroit, 21 March 1932). American violinist. He studied at Philadelphia and later with Zimbalist. In 1955 he joined the Boston SO, becoming leader in 1962, assistant conductor in 1971, and leading the orchestra's chamber ensembles; he left in 1984. He has given many solo performances with the Boston SO and other orchestras and has taught at Yale and Boston universities. He is one of the most accomplished American violinists of his time, with fine, resonant tone, impressive technique and exemplary musicianship. As a conductor he appeared with the Baltimore SO, 1981-3, then becoming artistic director of the Utah SO.
