US Military Dictionary: Josiah Harmar

Harmar, Josiah (1753-1813) Revolutionary War soldier, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Harmar participated in several battles, including Brandywine (1777) and Monmouth (1778). Most of his postwar duties were on the frontier; in 1790 he was ordered to lead an offensive against Indian villages on the Maumee River but was forced to retreat.
